The 12 Links of Pratītyasamutpāda Explained
The 12 links represent the cycle of suffering and rebirth.
1️⃣ Ignorance (Avidyā, 無明): Not seeing reality clearly, believing in a permanent self.
2️⃣ Mental Formations (Saṅkhāra, 行): Past karma, habits, and conditioning.
3️⃣ Consciousness (Viññāṇa, 識): The sense of “I” shaped by past actions.
4️⃣ Name & Form (Nāmarūpa, 名色): The body and mind as interconnected processes.
5️⃣ Six Senses (Ṣaḍāyatana, 六処): How we experience the world through perception.
6️⃣ Contact (Sparśa, 触): Interaction between senses and the external world.
7️⃣ Feeling (Vedanā, 受): Emotional reactions—pleasure, pain, or neutrality.
8️⃣ Craving (Tṛṣṇā, 愛): The desire to hold onto pleasure or avoid pain.
9️⃣ Clinging (Upādāna, 取): Deep attachment to desires and fixed identities.
🔟 Becoming (Bhava, 有): Creating karma that shapes our future experiences.
1️⃣1️⃣ Birth (Jāti, 生): The formation of new experiences or rebirth.
1️⃣2️⃣ Aging & Death (Jarāmaraṇa, 老死): The inevitable suffering of impermanence.
💡 Key Insight: Suffering isn’t caused by one thing—it’s a chain of interdependent causes. Breaking one link disrupts the cycle.
How to Break Free from the Cycle
1️⃣ Develop wisdom (prajñā) to overcome ignorance.
2️⃣ Reduce attachment by seeing things as impermanent.
3️⃣ Practice mindfulness to break automatic reactions.
🌿 Understanding these links helps us live with awareness, peace, and freedom.
